‘It’ is the direction suggested by our own imagination and spirit of enquiry and exploration. The style of the song is my version of what I heard, at the time, coming out of Europe. The song came to life just in the way the song describes.  Bill Buckingham laid down the electric guitar track for this as we laid down the bed track, sitting in front of the mixing board.  Neither of us could see any reason to replace or alter it.

I’m gettin’ old

That’s what I told this young friend of mine

/Dm7…/…./…./…./Am…/…./

He said age…is just a state of mind

/Dm7…/…./…./…./Am…/…./

I said….you’re too young to say

/E…/…./…./…./Dm7…/…./…./…./

He just dropped his eyes and turned his head away

/Dm7…/E…/

I could see he had in mind

/Dm7…/…./E…/…./

How said it is to get this old

/E…/…./Am…./…./

With the truth still so hard to find

When we are young

We shimmer like the new-grown wing

Ready to fly..prepared to take on anything

Stop life in its tracks..so it can watch us sashay by

With an all knowing glance

And a flirty, flirty eye

But the years do pass

And human will can’t hold them back

And what we gain

We must gladly take in trade

For what we come to lack

Deep inside the web of self-dellusion

The human soul

Is always trying to be free

Our demons weave that web of shadow and confusion

That our sweet wish for life

Might never come to be

So wish us luck

That we might shake the need that binds us

For I believe the truth is always there for us to find

And that the light will open up the path to freedom

And we must follow it where it may wend and wind
